Our Court |
As we mentioned in “Our Mission”, the NJAA’s goal is to to assist in getting jai-alai courts built for a new generation of players. After years of hard work, the Directors of the National Jai-Alai Association accomplished their first goal. Through efforts with the Edgemoor Neighborhood Association and the City of St. Petersburg, we are pleased to present the first amateur jai-alai court ever built by a city or municipality in the United States! The court was built with private financing raised by the NJAA and from the City of St. Petersburg's Weeki Wachee fund, which is earmarked for park and recreation projects. Of course, because this is an amateur court, the game we play does not use a ball like the one used by the pros. We use a rubber ball and our court is roughly half the size of a professional cancha. Still, the sport of jai-alai is very difficult to master. The Guinness Book of World Records has recognized the sport to be the fastest game in the world with throws reaching as high as 188 mph!
